Thinking skills, built deliberately

Feuerstein Instrumental Enrichment

A structured, research-based program that strengthens the thinking skills every subject depends on, through guided dialogue with a certified mediator.

“My child struggles with focus, learning or problem-solving.”

Build thinking skills from the ground up

Best for: Learners with attention, processing or learning challenges, with or without a diagnosis

Why it works

Feuerstein Instrumental Enrichment (FIE) is a cognitive program developed by Professor Reuven Feuerstein, built on the finding that intelligence is modifiable: the way a person thinks can change and grow at any age.

Rather than re-teaching subject content, FIE works on the thinking underneath it: comparison, classification, planning, precision, and the habit of checking your own work. Those skills carry into every subject a learner will ever meet.

What it builds

  • Sharper focus and attention

  • More systematic problem-solving

  • Thinking skills that carry into every subject

What sessions look like

  1. Structured pencil-and-paper instruments, worked through together

  2. Constant dialogue: the mediator asks, the learner reasons aloud

  3. Explicit bridges from each task to school, home and daily life

  4. Progress measured in the strategies a learner gains

In a parent’s words

The best part is that he enjoys the sessions.

What changed, in her words

  • Focus
  • Handwriting
  • Reads for longer
  • New vocabulary
My son has improved in his focus, his concentration, and handwriting since starting FIE mediation. I have found him reading for longer stretches and less need to play video games. He has developed vocabulary that helps him communicate what he is learning. That has also helped me as a parent to use the same vocabulary with him in between sessions. When before it was not easy to identify the issue and was frustrating for both of us. The best part is that he enjoys the sessions because Nereida has developed great rapport with him even though it’s online.

Common questions

What ages is FIE suitable for?

From age 3 to 90+. The program has levels designed for different developmental stages and cognitive profiles.

How long does a typical program last?

Most learners benefit from one or two sessions a week over one to two years. Cognitive change takes time, and the goal is lasting change rather than a quick fix.

Will this help with a diagnosed learning disability?

It often does. FIE has been used with learners who have ADHD, dyslexia, autism and intellectual disabilities. Because it develops the cognitive functions underneath learning, gains tend to show up across subjects. In the consultation we’ll be honest about what it can and can’t do for your learner.

How is FIE different from tutoring?

Tutoring focuses on content: a specific subject. FIE focuses on process: the cognitive functions that make all learning possible. It teaches how to think, not what to know.
